Wanghong lies on the Yinchuan plain in Ningxia, south of the regional capital, in the irrigated area watered by the Yellow River. This landscape has been farmed with the help of canals for a very long time, and the map reflects that with long straight channels and regular fields covering the flat land.
The town itself is a compact grid of streets, surrounded by farmland and villages linked by straight roads. Irrigation canals and ditches pass through in parallel lines, some running for long distances across the plain. Further west lie the Helan Mountains, and to the east the Yellow River, framing the fertile strip.
