Warabi covers only about five square kilometres in southern Saitama, just north of Tokyo, which makes it the smallest city in Japan by area. It is also one of the most densely populated. On a map the whole city fits comfortably into a single frame, and nearly every part of it is a fine, irregular mesh of narrow residential streets with barely any open ground.
The railway crosses the city with Warabi Station at its heart, linking residents to central Tokyo. Long before the trains, Warabi was a post town, Warabi-juku, on the Nakasendō, the inland road between Edo and Kyoto. The line of that old highway still runs through the street pattern.
