Whyalla lies on the eastern Eyre Peninsula in South Australia, on the western shore of Spencer Gulf. It is one of the state's major regional cities, built around heavy industry. From above, the town has curving suburban streets laid out in planned neighbourhoods, with the steelworks occupying a large site along the coast.
Iron ore from the Middleback Ranges to the west has long been at the heart of Whyalla's economy. The city also built ships during the Second World War, and the former HMAS Whyalla now stands on land as part of the Maritime Museum. Around the town, the map opens into dry, sparsely settled country.
