Yanggu is a county in Liaocheng, in the west of Shandong, on the wide, flat North China Plain. The county town is laid out in a largely regular grid of streets and blocks, and from above it forms a neat, compact shape set among farmland, villages and the straight lines of irrigation channels and country roads.
The land here has been shaped by rivers over many centuries, and the historic route of the Grand Canal passes through the county. Beyond the town, the map shows scattered villages connected by field roads, forming a fine, even texture across the plain, with the town itself as the densest point.
