Yecapixtla is in the northeast of Morelos, on the southern slopes that fall away from Popocatépetl. The town's best-known landmark is the former Augustinian monastery of San Juan Bautista, built in the sixteenth century. It is one of the early monasteries on the slopes of the volcano listed together as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The historic centre follows a typical colonial layout, with square blocks around the monastery and plaza.
