Yekaterinburg was founded in 1723 as an ironworks, and the dam built to power it still defines the centre. The Iset River was held back to create the City Pond, a long body of water running north–south through the historic core. The old dam, known as the Plotinka, is now a pedestrian space and the city's natural meeting point.
Around it, the centre follows a largely regular grid of wide streets, while the Iset continues south from the dam in a narrow course. Lake Shartash lies to the east, and forest surrounds much of the city. Yekaterinburg sits in the Ural Mountains, a short distance from the conventional boundary between Europe and Asia.
