Yuanyang lies in the hill country of south-eastern Gansu, a landscape of loess and folded ridges cut by river valleys. On the map, the town follows the shape of its valley, with the main streets stretched along the lower ground and the surrounding slopes marked by winding roads and terraced fields that follow the contours.
In this part of China, settlements are shaped by terrain more than by planning. The flat land is limited, so buildings cluster where the valley widens, and roads bend to avoid steep ground. From above, the pattern is linear and organic, very different from the regular grids of cities on the plains.
