Lijun lies on the plain south of Yinchuan, the capital of Ningxia, in a stretch of country made fertile by water drawn from the Yellow River. From above the land is flat and highly ordered: long straight canals, rectangular fields, tree-lined roads and villages set at regular intervals. Further west, the Helan Mountains form a natural wall between the plain and the desert beyond.
Irrigation on this plain has a very long history, with canals dug and extended over many centuries, and the network still defines how the landscape looks.
