Sungai Siput lies in Perak, north of Ipoh, in rolling country between the main range and the lowlands. From above the town has a compact centre of shophouse streets along the main road, with residential areas spreading out along side roads. Beyond them the land is covered with estates, smallholdings and patches of forest.
The surroundings are shaped by plantations, which appear as large, regular blocks crossed by estate roads, and by the hills to the east rising towards the Titiwangsa Range. Small rivers and streams wind through the landscape, and the main road and railway pass near the town on their way north.
A Sungai Siput map poster records a place with an important place in Malaysian history. In June 1948, the killing of three European planters on estates near Sungai Siput led to the declaration of the Malayan Emergency. Today it is a quiet town, and its map is a small, clear pattern set in estate country.
