Wangyuan is a town in the Yinchuan area of Ningxia, on the flat plain that the Yellow River has irrigated for centuries. The landscape is shaped by that water: straight canals and drainage channels divide the land into long rectangular fields, and roads usually follow the same lines.
The built-up area of the town is organised on a grid, with wider roads connecting it to the regional capital and surrounding settlements. As urban growth has extended from Yinchuan, newer blocks with large footprints sit next to older, smaller-scale housing and farmland.
