Abano Terme sits on the plain a short distance southwest of Padua. On the map it reads as a compact grid of streets thickening around a central pedestrian axis, loosened at the edges by large hotel plots. Each plot carries its own garden and pool, so the town looks built around water in a way few places its size do.
The hot springs have been used since Roman times, and the town's shape still follows that use. Spa hotels line the main avenues in long rows, parks fill the gaps between them, and the network of smaller residential streets feels secondary. To the south, Abano merges almost seamlessly with neighbouring Montegrotto Terme, forming one continuous thermal district.
