Ashkez̄ar lies in Yazd Province in central Iran, on the dry plain north-west of the city of Yazd. The surrounding land is arid, and from above the town appears as a defined patch of streets and cultivated plots within a broad, empty setting. The contrast between the settled area and the open desert is one of the strongest features of its map.
Like many towns in this region, Ashkez̄ar developed around a supply of water in a dry climate, and cultivated land sits close to the houses.
