Roads leave the centre in several directions, thinning into winding lanes and wooded hollows. The result is a map with a clear, dense core and a soft, irregular outer edge that fades into forest.
Beckley is the seat of Raleigh County in southern West Virginia. It was laid out by Alfred Beckley and named after his father, John James Beckley, the first Librarian of Congress. For much of its history the town served the surrounding coal fields, and the Beckley Exhibition Coal Mine still lets visitors ride into a former seam beneath the city's parkland.

The West Virginia Turnpike, carrying both I-64 and I-77, runs along the eastern side of the city in long, smooth curves that contrast with the short, angled streets of town.
