Beibei Map Poster

Beibei is a district of Chongqing, lying on the Jialing River some distance north of the city's main urban core. The map shows a town shaped almost entirely by terrain: streets follow the curve of the river along its banks, then climb in switchbacks into the hills. Unlike the flat grids of many Chinese cities, Beibei's network is broken into terraces and pockets of development.

To the west rises Jinyun Mountain, a protected forested ridge with old temples and walking paths, which appears on the poster as a broad, almost empty area. Along its course here, the Jialing passes through a series of narrow gorges known as the Little Three Gorges of the Jialing, where the water squeezes between steep cliffs and roads cling to the slopes.

Beibei is home to Southwest University, one of the major universities of western China, whose large campus occupies a significant part of the district. A Beibei map poster brings together river, mountain and campus in a single frame, a portrait of a place where the city is constantly negotiating with the landscape around it.
