Bercham lies on the eastern side of Ipoh, the capital of Perak, in the broad Kinta Valley. From above it is a grid of residential estates, terraced housing rows and neighbourhood streets laid out on the flat valley floor. The limestone hills of the Kinta area rise nearby, their steep, forested shapes standing out sharply against the regular housing below.
The Kinta Valley was once one of the world's richest tin-mining regions, and former mining land around Ipoh left behind ponds and lakes that still dot the landscape. Bercham developed as a residential area as Ipoh expanded outward, and today it is largely a place of family homes, schools, markets and local shops.
