Canterbury lies in east Kent on the River Stour, which splits into several channels as it flows through the city. From above, the historic centre is easy to spot: a rough oval of narrow medieval streets enclosed by the line of the Roman and medieval walls, now largely followed by the ring road. The cathedral precinct takes up a large part of the northeast quarter.
Canterbury Cathedral, seat of the Archbishop of Canterbury and the mother church of the Anglican Communion, is part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site together with St Augustine's Abbey and St Martin's Church. It was here that Thomas Becket was murdered in 1170, and the pilgrimage to his shrine inspired Chaucer's Canterbury Tales.
