Dorstfeld is a district in the west of Dortmund, in the heart of the Ruhr area of North Rhine-Westphalia. Like much of the Ruhr, it was transformed by coal mining, and the Dorstfeld colliery shaped the neighbourhood for generations before mining ended. That legacy is still visible on the map, in the layout of workers' housing and in the large spaces industry once occupied.
From above, Dorstfeld is a mix of textures: rows of older colliery houses in regular streets, larger residential blocks, and green areas where former industrial land has been reclaimed. Railway lines cross the district, drawing long curves through the street pattern, and the centre of Dortmund lies a short distance to the east.
