Ganning lies in the mountainous north-east of Chongqing, a region of steep ridges, narrow valleys and terraced slopes above the Yangtze basin. In country like this, a town cannot spread evenly. Its streets follow the valley floor and wrap around the lower slopes, and the map records that constraint clearly: built areas where the ground allows them, open hillside where it does not.
The result is an irregular, linear shape rather than a compact grid. Main roads bend with the terrain, smaller lanes climb away from them, and the edges of the town dissolve into fields and slopes.
