Ham Lake lies in Anoka County, north of the Minneapolis–Saint Paul area, and it looks different from a typical suburb on a map. There is no dense grid. Instead there are large residential lots, winding cul-de-sacs, patches of woodland and wetland, and a scatter of lakes, all held together by long section-line roads and a main highway running north to south.
The city takes its name from the small lake inside its boundaries, which early settlers thought was shaped like a ham. Ham Lake became a city in the 1970s and has kept a semi-rural character, with homes on generous plots and plenty of water and trees around them, a common pattern in the northern Twin Cities suburbs.

Long straight roads follow the old survey grid of the Midwest and divide the city into large square blocks. The curving neighbourhood streets fill the space inside them.
Lakes and wetlands
Smaller lakes, ponds and wetland areas are scattered through the city, rounded shapes that break up the street pattern and leave plenty of open space on the map.
