Issaquah sits east of Seattle, in a valley at the foot of the Issaquah Alps, a group of low, forested mountains that includes Cougar, Squak and Tiger. The city's map is framed by this terrain: streets fill the valley floor and climb in curves up the slopes, while the northern edge reaches the southern tip of Lake Sammamish.
Issaquah Creek runs through the old town, and each autumn salmon return upstream to the hatchery beside it, an event the city marks with its annual Salmon Days festival. Interstate 90 crosses the valley just north of downtown, a broad line separating the historic center from newer development closer to the lake.
Costco has its corporate headquarters in Issaquah, which has grown from a small coal mining and logging town into a sizeable suburb.
