Jarvis Island is a small, isolated coral island in the central Pacific, just south of the equator. It is an unincorporated territory of the United States and is uninhabited. From above it is a compact, rounded shape surrounded by a narrow fringing reef, with no lagoon of its own and no permanent settlement.
The land is low, sandy and dry, with sparse vegetation. In the nineteenth century the island was mined for guano, and in the 1930s a small group of colonists lived there briefly as part of a US settlement programme. Only faint traces of those periods remain. Today the island is part of a national wildlife refuge and marine national monument, visited mainly for research.
