Junqueiro is a municipality in the interior of Alagoas, in Brazil's Northeast, set among the rolling agricultural lands between the coast and the drier sertão. From above, the town is a small, dense core. Short blocks sit around a central square, and a few main roads lead out into wide fields.
This part of Alagoas has long been farmed for sugarcane, and the surrounding land shows as broad open spaces with only a thin network of rural roads. The contrast is strong.
