From above, Kitchener and Waterloo read as one continuous city. King Street runs diagonally between the two downtowns, and the grid shifts angle several times as it follows older farm roads and rail lines. The Conestoga Parkway loops around the core, and the Grand River traces a slow, wandering line along the eastern side, where the streets fade into floodplain and fields.

The city was founded by German-speaking settlers and was called Berlin until 1916, when it was renamed during the First World War. That heritage still shows in the Kitchener-Waterloo Oktoberfest, one of the largest outside Germany. On the map, the older neighbourhoods near downtown have tight, irregular blocks, while later suburbs spread outward in curving crescents and cul-de-sacs.
