Kula lies in the western Anatolian interior, in the province of Manisa. The town sits on sloping ground, and its older quarters form a tangle of narrow, irregular lanes. Newer streets stretch out along the main roads. Around it, the landscape is shaped by one of Turkey's youngest volcanic fields.
The Kula volcanic area is a UNESCO Global Geopark, with cinder cones, lava flows and fossilised footprints preserved in volcanic ash. The town is also known for its historic Ottoman houses, many with timber-framed upper floors, and for the Kula carpets once woven here and sold far beyond the region.
