Leyte lies in the Eastern Visayas of the Philippines. On the map it is a long island running north to south, with mountains down its centre and plains along the northern and eastern coasts. A narrower southern section splits into two peninsulas around Sogod Bay. The main highways follow the coast and climb across the island's middle.
Tacloban, the largest city, is at the north-eastern corner, where San Juanico Strait separates Leyte from Samar. The San Juanico Bridge crosses this narrow, island-studded channel and is one of the longest bridges in the country. Along the eastern shore, Leyte Gulf opens into the Philippine Sea.
A Leyte map poster covers a landscape tied to major events. In October 1944 Allied forces landed near Palo, and the Battle of Leyte Gulf followed, one of the largest naval battles in history. In November 2013 Typhoon Haiyan, known locally as Yolanda, struck Tacloban and the eastern coast with great force.
