Longjing is in the far northeast of Chongqing municipality, in the mountainous region around the Yangtze's Three Gorges. The land here is steep, and the map shows it. The town stretches along whatever narrow, level ground the valleys allow. Roads switch back and forth to climb the slopes, and settlements cling to terraces and ridges.
In this landscape, a road is never straight for long. Routes into and out of the town follow the contours of the mountains in long loops and hairpin bends. The surrounding countryside is a mix of forest, terraced farmland and scattered villages linked by narrow tracks.
