Manchester is a city in west St. Louis County, Missouri, roughly twenty miles west of downtown St. Louis. From above, its defining feature is Manchester Road, a long commercial corridor running east to west through the centre, with residential subdivisions of curving streets and cul-de-sacs branching off on either side. Creeks and wooded strips follow the low ground between neighbourhoods.
The road is older than the suburb. Manchester Road began as a nineteenth-century route west from St. Louis, and a small settlement grew up along it long before postwar housing filled the surrounding farmland. Today the city is mostly residential, with parks and school grounds forming green patches among the subdivisions.
