Maqin County lies in the Golog Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture of Qinghai, high on the Tibetan Plateau. Its seat, Dawu, sits at an altitude of around 3,700 metres. On a map the town appears as a compact grid of streets on a valley floor, surrounded by vast open grasslands. A few roads lead out across the plateau toward distant settlements.
The county takes its name from Amne Machin, a sacred mountain in Tibetan tradition. Its snow-covered massif rises well over 6,000 metres to the southeast of the town and is the focus of a long pilgrimage circuit. The Yellow River also crosses the county on its winding path through the high plateau, well before it reaches the lowlands of northern China.

A few long roads cross the surrounding grasslands with wide, gentle curves. They connect the town with herding areas and other settlements across the plateau.
