Maval is a taluka of Pune district in Maharashtra, on the high ground of the Sahyadri range, or Western Ghats, between Mumbai and Pune. On a map it is a landscape more than a single town: scattered settlements, winding roads and river valleys set among ridges, with the main transport routes squeezing through the gaps between the hills.
The Mumbai–Pune Expressway, the older highway and the railway all cross the area, running close together along the same corridor. Around them lie reservoirs such as Pavana Lake and hill forts including Lohagad and Visapur, while the rock-cut Buddhist caves at Karla and Bhaja are among the best-known sites of the region.
