Mbale is the headquarters of Vihiga County in western Kenya. It lies almost on the equator, in green, rolling country not far from Lake Victoria. The town grew along a main road, and its map shows this clearly. A central strip of shops and offices runs along the road, with smaller roads and paths branching off to homesteads and farms.
Vihiga is one of the most densely populated rural counties in Kenya, and the landscape around Mbale reflects it. Small farm plots, scattered houses and footpaths cover the hills.
