Meschede follows the valley of the upper Ruhr, and the map makes the terrain obvious even without contour lines. Streets crowd onto the valley floor and climb short distances up the slopes, while the surrounding hills stay largely empty, covered by the forests of the Sauerland. The river, the railway and the main road run roughly parallel, and the A46 motorway approaches from the west.
