Modakeke sits immediately beside Ile-Ife, in Osun State in south-western Nigeria, and on a map the two towns run into each other with little open space between them. Modakeke's streets form a dense, organic network of lanes and compounds, typical of older Yoruba towns, with main roads cutting through and linking it to the wider region.
The town was founded in the nineteenth century by people who settled here during a period of upheaval in the Oyo region, and its history is closely bound to that of its larger neighbour. Relations between Ife and Modakeke have at times been difficult, and the boundary between them remains an important local reality.
