Nicholasville is the seat of Jessamine County, in the heart of Kentucky's Bluegrass region just south of Lexington. Its map has a clear structure: a compact historic grid around the courthouse and Main Street, a long commercial corridor along US 27, and newer neighbourhoods of curving streets and cul-de-sacs spreading into the rolling farmland on either side.
South of town the land drops toward the Kentucky River, which has cut deep limestone palisades through this part of the state. Nearby, Camp Nelson, a Civil War supply depot and major recruitment centre for African American soldiers, is now a national monument.
