Nordhausen lies on the southern edge of the Harz mountains in northern Thuringia. The old town occupies higher ground above the valley of the Zorge, and the streets step down toward the river and the railway below. To the north the landscape rises toward the forested hills, while to the south it opens into the flatter Goldene Aue.
The town is known for Nordhäuser spirits and for being the southern terminus of the Harz narrow-gauge railway, whose trains run north into the mountains. Much of the centre was destroyed in 1945, and the nearby Mittelbau-Dora memorial marks the site of a former concentration camp. The cathedral of the Holy Cross remains a landmark of the old town.
