The river's wide channel, smaller creeks and low wetland thread through the settlement, while houses and roads occupy the higher ground between them.
The pattern is typical of coastal Kerala, where the built-up area is spread out rather than concentrated. Homes sit among coconut palms along winding lanes, and the main road and the railway run through the town in long, steady lines.
