Pinehurst sits in the Sandhills of North Carolina, a region of sandy soil and longleaf pine forest. It was founded in the 1890s as a winter resort by James Walker Tufts, who brought in the firm of Frederick Law Olmsted to design the village. The result is visible on any map: streets that curve and loop around a central green instead of forming a grid.
Golf soon became the village's identity. The Pinehurst No. 2 course, designed by Donald Ross, has hosted the U.S. Open several times, and the resort's many courses surround the village on nearly every side. Fairways, ponds and wooded lots fill much of the land, and houses sit among the pines along quiet winding roads.

Fairways and greens of the resort courses, including No. 2, create broad open forms around the village. They give the map a distinctive rhythm of built and unbuilt land.

Ponds and small lakes are scattered among wooded residential areas. They add soft, irregular shapes to the map and reflect the village's forested Sandhills setting.
