Qā’en is a town in South Khorasan Province, in eastern Iran, on a high, arid plain ringed by mountains. It is best known for saffron. The fields around the town and across the region produce some of the country's most prized crop, picked by hand every autumn. Barberries are another local speciality, and the town has been a regional centre for centuries.
From above, the older core is a compact mass of narrow lanes, while newer districts spread outward on more regular grids. Main roads cross the plain toward Birjand and other towns, and the mountains leave their mark in the ridges and dry valleys beyond. Irrigated fields and orchards add patches of fine detail against the open ground.
