Simferopol lies in the middle of the Crimean peninsula, away from the coast, in the gentle valley of the Salgir River. On a map the river is the organising line. It enters from the south-east, threads through the city in a narrow green corridor and leaves toward the northern steppe. Streets cluster on both banks, denser near the old centre and looser on the slopes that rise to either side.

The city was laid out in the late eighteenth century beside the older Tatar settlement of Ak-Mechet, and that double origin still shows. The historic centre has a fairly regular pattern of blocks, while older quarters follow more irregular lines. On the city's edge are the remains of Scythian Neapolis, a hilltop site from the last centuries before the common era.

Simferopol is also the starting point of one of the longest trolleybus routes anywhere. The line climbs over the mountains to Alushta and Yalta on the coast. That road leaves the map heading south, a reminder that the city works as a crossroads for the whole peninsula.
