Svetlograd lies in Stavropol Krai in southern Russia, on the Yegorlyk river. It began as the village of Petrovskoye and received its present name and town status in the mid-twentieth century. From above, it has the broad, regular layout typical of large southern Russian settlements, with long straight streets, wide blocks and gardens behind many houses, stretching along the river valley.
The river and its reservoirs form the main natural lines on the map, curving through a landscape of fields and gentle slopes. The town serves as the centre of the Petrovsky district, with roads leading out in several directions to villages and farms across the steppe.
