Thānesar Map Poster

Thānesar sits on the level plain of northern Haryana, where roads, rail and irrigation channels run across farmland that stretches to every horizon. From above, the town reads as a compact older core with newer colonies spreading outward, and it merges almost seamlessly with neighbouring Kurukshetra. Water is the defining shape here: large sacred tanks appear on the map as crisp geometric blocks set among irregular lanes.

The largest of these is Brahma Sarovar, a long rectangular tank that draws pilgrims in great numbers, especially during solar eclipses. Around it, the street pattern loosens into ghats, gardens and temple precincts. History runs deep in the name as well: Thanesar, once known as Sthaneshvara, was the capital of the Pushyabhuti rulers, including the seventh-century king Harsha, before the court moved to Kannauj.
