Tocumen lies on the eastern edge of the Panama City metropolitan area, on low ground that runs down toward the Pacific. Its map is dominated by one large feature: the long parallel runways of Tocumen International Airport, the country's main gateway. Around them, residential districts fill the gaps between highways, drainage channels and remaining green land.
Toward the coast the street pattern gives way to mangroves and wetland, where rivers and creeks twist through low vegetation before reaching the bay. Inland, newer housing estates sit in tidy clusters, each with its own loop of roads connected to the main arteries heading west into the capital.
