Torbat-e Jām lies in Razavi Khorasan province in north-eastern Iran, close to the borders with Afghanistan and Turkmenistan. From above, it sits on a broad, open plain. Main roads lead into the centre, where older neighbourhoods are packed together, while newer residential districts spread outwards in more regular blocks. Farmland lies beyond the edges of the built area.
The town grew around the tomb of Sheikh Ahmad-e Jām, a Sufi mystic and poet of the eleventh and twelfth centuries. The shrine complex, with buildings added over several centuries, is its best-known landmark and still draws visitors. Its name reflects this history: torbat means tomb. The shrine forms a distinct walled footprint on a detailed map.
