Traipu sits on the left bank of the São Francisco River in Alagoas, on the river's lower course before it reaches the Atlantic. From above, the town follows the water, with streets running parallel to the bank and then rising gently inland. The state of Sergipe lies on the opposite shore, so the river here is both a landscape and a boundary.
Like other towns on the lower São Francisco, Traipu grew up facing the river, and its oldest streets sit close to the water.
