Uslar lies in southern Lower Saxony, on the western edge of the Solling, a large forested upland between the Weser and the Leine. On a map, the town is a small, dense cluster of streets in a valley. Forest covers much of the surrounding land, so the built-up area looks like an island of fine lines in a wide field of open space.
The historic centre is a tight knot of short, irregular lanes, typical of a small German market town that grew over centuries. Many of its buildings are half-timbered, although the map shows only their footprint and the pattern of the streets.
