Valkeakoski lies in the Pirkanmaa region of southern Finland, on the narrow rapids that link lake Vanajavesi with lake Mallasvesi. From above, water defines the town: the centre sits on land between broad lakes, with channels, bridges and islands, and residential areas spread along the shores into the surrounding forest. The irregular coastline gives the map a strong, organic outline.
The town grew around the paper and pulp industry, which drew on the power of the rapids and the forests of the region. Large mill complexes still stand close to the water, and much of the town's development followed the growth of the industry in the twentieth century. The nearby Voipaala manor now houses an art centre.
