Wangen im Allgäu lies in the far south-east of Baden-Württemberg, close to the Bavarian border and not far from Lake Constance. Its core is a compact historic town that grew as an imperial free city. On a map the old town shows as a tight, almost rectangular knot of streets. Newer districts spread around it in looser curves.
Two surviving city gates anchor the historic centre: the Ravensburger Tor and the Lindauer Tor, also known as the Martinstor. Streets run between them and open into small squares lined with painted facades. The river Argen flows past the edge of town, adding a soft, curving line of water to the drawing.
