Wellington is a cantonment town in the Nilgiri Hills of Tamil Nadu, just beside Coonoor. Its map is shaped by altitude. Roads wind around the contours of steep hills, doubling back on themselves in long hairpins, and buildings sit in clusters on the flatter shelves wherever the terrain allows.
The town is closely tied to the Indian armed forces. It is home to the Defence Services Staff College and to the regimental centre of the Madras Regiment. Those institutions show up on the map as large, well-ordered compounds with sports fields, parade grounds and tree-lined internal roads, set apart from the denser civilian bazaar area.
