‘Afrīn lies on the river of the same name, in a broad valley in the far northwest of Syria near the Turkish border. The river runs alongside the town, and on a map its curves set the direction of the main streets. The densest part of the centre sits on the flatter ground near the water, and newer districts spread gently outward from there.
The surrounding region is known above all for olives. Groves cover the slopes around the valley, and the area has long been one of the country's important sources of olive oil. On a map those hills show as a softer, sparser pattern of tracks and small villages rather than a dense grid, which gives the town a clear outline.
