Al Quşayr, often written El Quseir, lies on Egypt's Red Sea coast, between Safaga and Marsa Alam. For centuries it was an important port, the sea end of a desert route through the Eastern Desert to the Nile valley, used by traders and by pilgrims travelling to and from Mecca.
The town still has an Ottoman-era fortress and an older quarter of low buildings near the waterfront. On the map, this historic core forms a compact cluster beside the shore, while newer districts and resorts extend along the coast in a thin line, with the desert and mountains rising inland.
