River confluence
The Swannanoa joins the French Broad south of downtown. Their corridors, with the rail lines and the River Arts District beside them, define the city's lower edges.

Mapa
Asheville Map Poster & Print
Asheville lies in a broad valley in the Blue Ridge Mountains of western North Carolina. The French Broad River runs north through the western side of the city, and the Swannanoa River comes in from the east to join it. On the map, the streets bend around ridges and follow the creek beds, so the city looks irregular, with no single grid to organise it.
The downtown sits on a rise above the rivers and is known for its Art Deco buildings, including the tall, stepped City Hall. South of the centre, the Biltmore Estate covers a vast area of forest, fields and gardens around the Vanderbilt family's château. The Blue Ridge Parkway passes along the city's eastern and southern edges.
An Asheville map poster traces this landscape through its roads. The dense downtown knot, the winding streets through the hills, the river corridors and the large open space of the Biltmore grounds all appear together. The terrain shows through the shape of the street network itself, and that gives the city a very organic look.

Biltmore Estate
A huge, mostly open area south of the centre, crossed by a few winding drives. It creates a large, quiet space against the denser city streets.
Hillside streets
Residential roads curve around ridges and hollows in every direction, and their looping patterns hint at the steep terrain beneath them.
